Is Slackware Still Alive?
 

Hi!
I've been using Slackware on my server machines for many years. In fact, I've been using it since the very first version - before that, I used SLS, and before that Yggdrasil, and before that, the MCC Interim Distribution.

It's been my habit to upgrade my server every few years. Get a new machine, load the latest Slackware, get all my tools & utilities up & running, set up the databases - and then cross my fingers and cut over.

In between, I stay up to date - to some extent - by downloading source packages and building them. This can be problematical, because things depend on other things. The older the machine gets, the more problematical.

I really like Slackware - for my purposes - because it's simple and standard. No cutesy GUI files. All the config, rc, ini files are where I expect to find them.

But I note with alarm that the latest release is 14.1 in 2013-11. And there are no entries in the slackware.com site since then. Does anybody know if Patrick V is still working on it? Actually, is he OK?

A new release should be out any day now.
You should, on occasion, check the change logs for -current.

Yes, it's still alive, very much so.
 

If you run -current, there's usually MANY updates every day.

Currently, -current shows version "14.2". The -current kernel is the most current "Long Term" kernel.

Did you read anything else in the forum prior to posting that? Or look at the freaking changelogs on slackware.com?

Why would he need to read anything else?
He went to Slackware.com and noted that it has not been updated since 2013-11-07.
Most people looking for Slackware Linux would arrive at slackware.com as the main representative entity for Slackware Linux.
The News page is what loads as front page.
Seeing that not even one line of text has been added in 3 years, would lead to a fair assumption that the project is dead, abandoned, or grossly neglected.
The lesson I'm trying to draw from this is that Patrick would be wise to put at least one line once in a while (maybe every 6 months or so?) in the news section for the "drive-by" visitors to get some idea what's happening.
It's the practical and professional thing to do ;)

To be fair, OP stated he'd been running Slackware since its very first version, so one would have thought that he'd have picked up on Slackware's ebbs and flows by now... :^)
