That is too bad. GSB was a very good version of Gnome for Slackware, I ran it a few times. In my opinion Pat made the right call ditching Gnome years ago. The selection of DE/WMs in Slackware 14.0 is exceptional.
The fact is people participate in development or package maintaining usually because they have an interest in the project in someway.
Not sure, but maybe, the GSB team weren't happy with the direction Gnome took with Gnome3.
Gnome2 is still a fairly decent desktop environment compared to Gnome3. Gnome2 is kinda like Xfce as it's fairly lightweight and all. I know the BSDs and other UNIX systems still use Gnome2 in some ways.
Gnome3 is just a mangled train wreck. Even the Gnome developers hate Gnome3.
I'd like to see a MATESlackBuild project, but won't be taking it on myself. If anyone wants to do that though, I'd be happy to work with the project to make sure that we've got a proper foundation for it, much like we did with GSB.
