If the package maintainer overlooked something, that's relevant in your particular environment, it will either not work, add things you actually don't need to your system, or even screw up something in your system.

I couldn't agree with you more. I had similar issues with Debian lenny kde. I like gvim editor. I installed it and everything got messed up. I had to reinstall Lenny. Synaptic manager is not super intuitive.
