I had discussed my inability to print from an XP/Virtualbox install to a CUPS printserver on the thread
how-to-install-vista-on-a-working-slack-pc and thanks to Erik_FL et al who replied. After finding a solution I thought it might be helpful to others if I put the solution in its own thread.
I have XP-SP3 caged up in Virtualbox on a Slack-12.2 machine that prints on Slack-12.2 server via CUPS. I did not want to run a samba server to print from XP and since win2k it has been possible to print from a winbox using IPP which I had done successfully once before in the distant past
After setting up a network printer using the address
http://192.168.1.4:631/printers/nameofprinter, XP could see the printer but when I tried to print anything I would end up with a "Print-Job client-error-document-format-not-supported" message in the server's /var/log/cups/access_log.
This was not a network problem. It was a cups configuration problem.
I had XP printing on the server after I uncommented the line "application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -" in /etc/cups/mime.convs on the server.
