Ipad 3 ("new") on Slackware 13.37 64bit Multilib and KDE
 

Hello,

I've just bought the "new" ipad (iknow i'll not go to paradise, anyway ;) ) and of course trying to sync it with Slackware, here is what i've installed:

- libtasn1-2.12-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
- usbmuxd-1.0.7-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
- libplist-1.8-x86_64-1.txz
- libimobiledevice-1.1.2-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
- ifuse-1.1.1-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz

- libgnomecanvas-2.30.3-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
- gtkpod-0.99.16-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz

I use Slackbuild script with latest source version to create package.

- Dolphin: can access the USB PTP Class Camera folder
- Amarok: nothing
- GtkPod: can browse the device but sync doesn't work

Ipad have already been synced on a Windows/iTunes with music.

Any idear ? i'm lost ;)

Theres not really any good way to sync an iP?d with linux. iPod touches after the 3rd gen, iPhones after the 3rd gen, and iPads after the 1st gen are pretty hit and miss as far as syncing goes. To put movies on there, I installed the vnc app and scp converted video to /var/mobile/media. You have to jailbreak to do that though.

currently I'm working on getting my ipod touch and ipad syncing with a virtual windows xp in qemu, as it appears that a VM may be the best option when it comes to this kind of thing.

As trademark91 said, a VM is about the only way to do it. It is PAINFULLY slow to transfer though (at least on my machine). I have an Ipod touch, and the only way I could get it to work with Slack was to install XP in a VM via VBox. One other way to do it, although I have no experience with Ipads, is to jailbreak it and use sshfs to transfer stuff. Bypass Itunes altogether.

In my experience you have two options:
1) use GoodReader & ftp, and iCloud
2) jailbreak and do everything

I choose 1.

Hi,

Easiest is to have a separate system setup if possible. VMs' are nice if you have system resources but most times users are utilizing on older hardware. I have a boxen with Xp setup for the kids so I use that one. My wife gave me a iPod Touch for my music last Xmas. Been using the machine to build my library. New boxen is on the build bench to replace the Old one.

I happen to like the iPad & iPod. Just another tool to enhance my life. These tools are just that, tools. Not a religion! Some cannot look past the ideology and forsake the evil corporation(s) for sometimes band aids. Gnu/Linux is great! I have it on all my systems. Generally dual boot but sometimes VM is used if the hardware allows a transparent install. Meaning the resources are there to support the functionality and not at a loss of time/speed.
