This is probably a dumb question but how do I go about connecting to the internet? I tried kppp but couldn't get it to work. I just said "modem is busy".
ps- wouldn't it make sense to put the US as a country in the KPPP wizard?
I've helped folk with dial-up in the past so many times I wrote how-to's on doing it with pppsetup script in slack and kppp. You will find the former at this address and at the bottom of that page a link to the later.
if not:
probably the module for your nic is not loaded.
you can look at the output of " lspci " to see what nic you've got,
and load the module with " modprobe <modulename> "
ifconfig doesn't show an eth0 interface. Where is the nic module? also, when I run lspci, it says "pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci/00/0..." for every subdivision of that folder. then does the same this but instead says " Unable to read 64 bytes of configuration space " then the files. it also says the Host bridge is disabled
what's your hardware ?
do you have a seperate nic on a pci-card ( wht type ?) or is it on the mobo ?
if the latter, do you know the brand and type of the motherboard ?
Is there a command or program that lists all of the hardware, if not, where could I find that info? The ethernet cable is plugged into the back of the computer. Sorry for my lack of knowledge about the computer. it was bought in 1998 so I don't really know too much about it. Its a Gateway solo 3150 if that tells you anything.
