Internal wireless on/off help

I am running slackware 10.1 with kernel 2.6.10 on a thinkpad x30 with an internal mini pci IBM high rate lan wireless can. For power reasons, there are many times I would like to turn the card off. Does "ifconfig eth1 down" actually cut power to the card, or only disable the network connection (or perhaps these are the same thing?)?

Thanks,

JR

I'm not sure that ifconfig will actually power-down a WLAN card. It is really just for managing the high-level interfaces.

You might want to look into the power management options that are in iwconfig. I know there are settings that will power down the WLAN card after a certain time period, or if it is idle.
