Question Intel PRO/100 VE NIC not working

Hi,
I have slackware 10.2 with the default kernel 2.4 (sata.i). I have pentium D proc, Intel D945GCL mobo with PRO/100 VE NIC which was not detected by the system. Then I did modprobe e100 (e100 is driver for that card) gave me messages that device not found. Then I downloaded the fresh driver form Intel website compiled it; got a warning but installed it properly.
Then I put /sbin/modprobe e100 in my rc.modules file and rebooted.
My system crashed on booting with this message (snippet)

This message kept on repeating until I poweroff the machine.
I think the driver is malfunctioning. But how should I get this fixed?

Thanks.

By searching through previous threads I found some people suggested eepro100 driver for that card. I tried that but its not working either.
Here's the output of make install of the /src of driver I installed (e100-3.5.17)

make
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/e100-3.5.17/src'

**************************************************
** e100.o built for 2.4.31
** SMP Disabled
**************************************************

make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/e100-3.5.17/src'
# remove all old versions of the driver
find /lib/modules/2.4.31 -name e100.o -exec rm -f {} \; || true
find /lib/modules/2.4.31 -name e100.o.gz -exec rm -f {} \; || true
install -D -m 644 e100.o /lib/modules/2.4.31/kernel/drivers/net/e100/e100.o
/sbin/depmod -a || true
install -D -m 644 e100.7.gz /usr/man/man7/e100.7.gz
man -c -P'cat > /dev/null' e100 || true

This might give you some clue of what went wrong.
Its telling that SMP disabled. Default kernel doesnt have SMP enabled But my proc (pentium D) could (or should?)work with SMP. Is this the reason for driver crash?

hi,

I just found out, its an "Oops" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel_oops
I have default slackware 10.2 with the Linux 2.4.31 kernel which I didn't recompile or edited in any way. Also the driver for the card are from intel's site (e100-3.5.17) which also are not edited or changed (It ain't my fault ). I simply did make install and the modprobe e100.

What does this mean? Have I found a bug in one of the software. What should I do then? report it? to whom?

expecting some reply .. this time ...

I used either of the e100 or Via-Rhine modules for that NIC, I have the same one on my motherboard.
Currently I use e100 with the 2.6 kernel, but had no trouble with 2.4.

I've had the same problem. However after having the error first, then tried "modprobe e100" again it would work fine. While rebooting it couldnt release the irq though. but it worked temporarely, i also couldnt load the module at start up and if I tried to load it twice (how it worked after boot) because the system would hang. I compiled a the new kernel 2.6.20.1 and just picked the intel 10/100 nic and it works alright.
good luck
