Intel Nvidia Bumblebee and Black Screen in Slackware going to init 5 - KDE X Window

Hi,

I'm with Slackware from my beginning of using linux - it's about 8 years. But now I have 2 problems that I can't solve out and I need your help. About the second one I will write in a different thread.

Laptop Lenovo Z580 with Intel build in and NVIDIA GT 635M, i5.
I'm struggling with this laptop for couple of days - can't run X Windows (KDE).
When I'm using kernel 3.3.8 laptop boots normaly without, a problem. When I'm using kernel 3.9.4 I have to take out my battery and even though there are some minor problems.
On kernel 3.3.8 I did try:
turn off primus in BIOS and run only Intel GPU - log says - No Device/Screen detected.
turn on primus in BIOS and with Bumblebee, bbswitch, VirtualGL try to run X Windows - log says everything is going ok but I can see only black screen. CTRL+ALT+BCKSP works - I can see that screen is refreshing.
When I'm trying to use VESA (with or without xorg.conf) I can get KDE but the screen is split into two parts - in a middle of the screen ends the right bottom corner and start the left bottom corner of desktop.
Look at the screen - http://s22.postimg.org/43h9bhxv5/lenovo_Z580.jpg

This is my first time that I don't know WTF. I didn't have any kind of problems (not solved) with Slackware. But now I don't know where to look for the answer.

PLEASE HELP :)

When I'm using kernel 3.3.8 laptop boots normaly without, a problem. When I'm using kernel 3.9.4 I have to take out my battery and even though there are some minor problems.

From personal testing (perhaps someone else can confirm), this laptop needs at least a 3.6 kernel or newer to work properly.

On some kernels, issues have been reported with ACPI. These include slow booting, as well as improper management of power.

If you run into these issues, you can either boot with acpi=off added to your kernel's boot line, or try with a a different kernel. Remember that turning ACPI off will disable some power-management features in the kernel, and may also disable hyper-threading (the feature that allows Intel Core processors to “emulate” extra cores).
My suggestion would be to try using Slackware-current with the 3.8.13 kernel.

I always boot into runlevel 3. That way, if the GUI fails to run after I type 'startx', at least I have a text session whereby I can start fixing things. Far as I can see in my inittab, that's the Slackware default anyway. So consider that a suggestion from Pat too :-)

# These are the default runlevels in Slackware:
# 0 = halt
# 1 = single user mode
# 2 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 3 = multiuser mode (default Slackware runlevel)
# 4 = X11 with KDM/GDM/XDM (session managers)
# 5 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 6 = reboot

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)

Thanks for answers - for me init 4 is not a problem - I can switch to console. Of course if I have problems with X's I turn them off and do what you said - test configuration by going manualy to "startx".

I will check 3.8.13 kernel and let you know how it works.

The 3.8.13 kernel has the same problem with booting. I will check today if there is a problem with snd-hda-intel - I have it as a part of my kernel. This can be a problem, because I changed this in my Alienware machine and it fixed problems with slow boot. Maybe this is a problem for Lenovo too.

I will try to install bumblebee one more time with instructions found here: http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:har...nvidia_optimus according to allend suggestions.

kingbeowulf 06-02-2013 05:57 PM

Thus might be a long shot, but still good to check.

I am running stock Slackware64 14.0 (multilib) with kernel-3.2.29 with Xorg server-1.12.3 with nvidia-319.17 (no other GPUs enabled).
You are running Slackware 13.37 with kernel-3.3.8 (etc) and Xorg server-1.9.5 and nvidia-319.23 with i915 video enabled.

The VESA screenshot might be an artifact of the 2 GPUs.

How about installing Slackware-14.0 with the stock kernel, disable one of the 2 GPU chipset in the BIOS. Sometimes we assume the kernel is borking a system when it is really some old version system software that is the culprit. Better to start with the newest versions and then step the kernel forward as a last resort since in you case, the GPU problem won't get fixed via the kernel. Per allend, you can also try Slackware-current; however, his reasoning from the provided link may be faulty: Ubuntu is one fucked up distro and I have seen numerous systems refuse to run Ubuntu properly than ran just spiffy with Slackware. YMMV.

Remember the rule of one: make one change, then test. Repeat. To summarize:
  • Slackware-14.0 or -current
  • disable one GPU if possible (or blacklist or remove Nvidia physically)
  • make sure you can boot into runlevel 3
  • adjust kernel (acpi etc) or upgrade to boot (check syslog, messages, dmesg for boot time errors)
  • check if the intelhd (for the integrated GPU) is loaded fired up with startx
  • If not fix errors in Xorg.0.log
  • blacklist (or diusable in BIOS) intelhd and try Nvidia (install nvidia blob), fix errors in Xorg.0.log
Once that all works, then you can try Optimus/Bumblebee to get both working at the same time (switchable).

Have fun.
