I've also been following those bug reports. I've had problems compiling anything below xorg-1.6. At the moment I am using Intel-2.3.2 with xorg-1.6.3 but it is really slow and uses up an extra 100MB of my ram for some reason.
I am going to go back to using the latest xorg but with the vesa driver although the performance is not too good.
Just an update. Since I am getting an Nvidia 6200 agp card, also, since I had made backups of all the xorg packages I compiled from 12.2's source files, I decided to tinker around with xserver 1.8.1 while still using the 845G int. video.
I tried a git kernel build following the instructions at bug #27187, but using i915.modeset=1 crashes the system after lilo.
Anyway, I got the newer xorg compiled, seems to run nicely. (Reminder to self, my EPI monitor isn't recognized, dab nabbit). Anyhoo, running a custom build of the 2.6.33 kernel, and *fingers crossed* no EIR stuck yet. I really don't have any hope left that it will work, , it's just for fun, . Well, time to fire up urbanterror and see if BLAMMO. Tomarrow I'll really start tweaking with it all.
Glxgears ran perfectly (Guessing that Assaultcube would have worked, it always had, except for a dark screen), UrbanTerror still causes the EIR stuck/hangcheck timer elapsed/batchbuffer (Whatever...) as soon as it starts.
Hi
I'm going through the same thing... ugh.
Not sure what to do next... it sounds like you've done a lot more than I have, with little luck, so maybe I'll just forget it.
One thing... my X seems to have died a few times while using the mouse. I'm starting to think there's something going on with that.
Anyway, maybe I'll try the vesa driver... I just use this pc for web browsing, running vncviewer, etc. at work.
Do keep updating this if you have any breakthroughs!
Fortunately, or unfortunately , I am no longer using the 845G. I got enough money to get an Nvidia 6200 AGP card, but I haven't given up on the 845G yet, though (Have another machine that I'd like to upgrade). I do keep watching the bug reports and waiting for the issues to be solved. Once that happens this thread/forum/message/whatever will be labeled SOLVED as soon as I spot it, or someone else does, and it has been tested thoroughly.
As for the vesa driver, it should be good enough. When I used it there weren't any issues with browsing, or using any programs that didn't use GL.
and from time to time I try new drivers but finally always fall back to VESA or EXA (when it was available). But now, for some time
Code:
16:26:12 up 15:40, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.03, 0.00
my system is stable and the GPU doesn't hang using the intel accelerated driver. Here is the combination I'm using at the moment:
kernel: 2.6.34.2-smp, based on Slackware's generic config,
libdrm: libdrm-2.4.21
mesa: mesa-7.8.2
xorg: xorg-server-1.8.2
driver: xf86-video-intel-2.12.0
With Slackware's stock drivers, the GPU used to hung after between 10 minutes and 2 hours.
Now I think that this combination works due to the commit 430155d430dd1496ecaebc8035c79dc5506ae4f5 in the 2.6.34.2 kernel, but I can't be sure.
Also I'd like to inform you that it is possible to temporarily update the graphics card video bios using the vbetool. It probably doesn't help for the accelerated driver at all, but it helped me to get higher resolution with VESA driver. If you're interested then simply download the intel drives for Windows, extract the video bios and update it with:
If you're used to compiling, you may try the latest patches at those links. Maybe they'll help. Though, IMO, I think that you may have to use either an older distro, compile an older version of Xorg, get a PCI-E, or AGP if that's what you have, or at least a cheap PCI card.
Thx a lot, I have 845, but which patch should I install?
Unfortunately, I don't know. I only watch the bug reports waiting for it to be solved, I just don't have the attention span to keep up with it all.
If you do wish to continue and try a patch, be sure to read the threads at the bug reports concerning those patches, it would be far more helpful than I can be. Also, from reading a bit more, it doesn't look like the patches are there yet. So don't expect them to fix your issues.
Maybe someday, hopefully sooner than later, it will be fixed...

This is really strange this BUG exists since 1,5 year and no way at the moment to solve it.
Because of this problem, I must migrate back all debian workstations to Windows XP.
Even debian testing has this problem and we cannot downgrade to Lenny, bacause Lenny has other problems with new monitors.
Our Management has slowly enough, they don't want to change graphic cards, that's really hard for linux...

Unfortunately, it's really not all that strange. Just something that happens.
Maybe I overlooked it, but I wasn't aware that these were company computers. It maybe in your companies best interests then to use XP, unless you don't need 3D then the Vesa driver would do just fine. When I was trying to fix this a year ago, and before I downgraded Xorg, I was able to use it for everything. Even a few 3d programs worked decent enough.
Also, out of curiosity, what "new monitors" are you referring to? Maybe a search through google for those monitors on the older xorg might turn up something.
<Edit>
Am testing some changes to my window manager and while I had the time I did a few quick searches.
If in the thread module for dell st2220t multi touch monitor is the monitor you're referring to, and if you do decide to go with XP, you may want to test it on one machine first. A quick google search, dell st2220t windows xp, doesn't return a lot, but some of them are about problems with the monitor.
I finally borrowed a machine with the notorious 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device. At first I ran into all kinds of problems with it, and was almost ready to consider it hopeless when I went into the BIOS settings and found that the default video memory setting was only 1MB. I changed it to 8MB (the maximum the board in this Dell Dimension machine would allow), and after that it was up and running nice and stable (Slackware 13.37, 2.6.37.6-smp).
