Installing WINE

I'm trying to install WINE but it doesn't come as a .rpm for Slackware. How would I do it since it comes as a .tgz?

Get the newest wine package from, eg:

http://www.linuxpackages.net

and install the package with:

installpkg wine-<version>.tgz

Alternatively you may use the tool pkginstall.

Maybe you may want to read the following slack guide: "The Official Guide To Slackware Linux" from http://www.slackware.com/book/

I though pkginstall was only for .rpm's. I will for sure read that guide, thanks.

OK, I installed the package using KPackage and then I read the readme. I did wine sol.exe as the readme used as an example and I got that it can't find /root/.wine/ what'd I do wrong?

If you are running your Linux box as root instead of as a user then you should be shot and sent back to Bill Gates!!!!
One of the most fundamental aspects of using a *nix system is that you NEVER EVER EVER use root UNLESS it is to do some basic maintenance work and then it is for short and very specific tasks.
I truly do hope that I misunderstood your point about "[...] can't find /root/.wine/ [...]" and that you were not meaning you were surfing the web and doing all the computing stuff as root.

I haven't installed wine right now, but what I remember is, that one must create a fake windows directory/partion.

Also there must be a wine configuration file (/etc/wine.conf)) which must be adapted to your configuration.

Maybe you give winesetuptk a try (I haven't try it for myself). It can be downloaded from:

https://sourceforge.net/project/show...?group_id=6241

or

http://www.linuxpackages.net/

Now how is anybody gonna learn anything if you want to shoot them.

I just logged on this morning and this is the second thread I've seen where people have gotten personal and attacked another poster. Was there a full moon last night?

I haven't even had slackware for 24 hours, so yea I have been going around as root. All I've been doing since I installed it though was trying to figure out how to connect to the internet through my network card..which that type of stuff requires root access, no point in su-ing each time I don't think.

Sorry Trust - didn't mean that you should be shot literally!!! I should have put the smiley in to indicate that I was joking with you. My bad!!
Anyway - the point is serious nonetheless because surfing and doing ordinary work as root is a big no-no. You are very liable to make an irreparable mistake or if your security is compromised running it as root will mean your system is that much more easily compromised as a whole.

wine can't find libs

I don't know how to make new posts on here just yet.......sorry!

I'm trying to install wine 20040309 tar.gz

I typed in:
./configure --enable-opengl
make depend
make

at the end of compiling wine it says:

make [2]: *** [Y.tab.c] Broken pipe
make[2]: Leaving directory '/home/tommy/wine-20040309/libs/wpp'
make[1]: *** [wpp] Error 2
make[1]: *** Leaving directory '/home/tommy/wine-20040309/libs'
make: *** [libs] Error 2

Looks to me that it need wine libarys, hav'nt got these installed.
I have looked for them in tar form and RPM, but having no luck.

Could smone explain where i'm going wrong, if I need the updated wine libarys, if so, where do I get them?

Thanks in advance

ps: I'd love to get half life working with wine, it is possible apparently.......

I have no clue about your problem, but the new Steam Half-Life does not work in Wine.. sorry. You might want to keep a dual boot system if you intend to play games.

you don't nessarly have to have a dual boot system to play game, I know serveral people (including myself) who run steam in linux it just takes LOTS of time and LOTS of energy.......

Cheers, mike
