Installing TT Fonts - done, but where are they?

Following the instructions here:

All I had to do was install them like normal fonts, after I decompressed them with cabextract.

For example.. Extract them and put all of them in ~/.fonts/ms/
Then run

mkfontdir .
mkfontscale .
fc-cache -vv .
from within that directory.

--Shade
I've downloaded the fonts that I need (fairly standard bunch of 'em, they go on any system that I do image editing on. All of the 04b series, plus a couple others). I've done the above instructions (in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mine/ instead of .fonts).
There are fonts.cache-1, fonts.dir and fonts.scale files in that directory, and I added the directory to /etc/X11/fs/config at the end of the "catalogue" line. I've rebooted, but they still don't show up in xfontsel, nor in Gimp.

What am I missing??

Try adding a FontPath entry (Under Section "Files") in /etc/X11/xorg.conf pointing to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mine/ and restart X.

Edit: As LiNuCe says below, there are some default FontPath already in xorg.conf so you can put your fonts there, or add a FontPath poiting to your custom directory.

You have to copy your *.ttf fonts files in either in ~/.fonts (the fonts will be available only for your own user) or in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/ (the fonts will be available to all users of your Slackware system) : do NOT copy them in a subdirectory ! Then run the following commands (order is important) :

Code:
$ cd ~/.fonts # or "cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF" as root
$ mkfontscale .
$ mkfontdir .
$ fc-cache
Sometimes applications need to be restarted in order to see the newly installed fonts.

Ahhh... I apologize. I had found the page http://linux.org.mt/article/ttfonts#N10057 first, which is why I just made up a directory. I will relocate them to the standard directory and try this again.

Thanks, it's very much appreciated :-)
