Installing swaret
Well Im still a newbie to linux but im getting the hang of it.. slowly but surely..
A few months ago a friend walked me through the installation of swaret but i cant remember every command he gave me, and sadly enough i dont have it written down (note to self: write down).. Well I went to the swaret site.. downloaded the tgz file and now its sitting on my desktop.. can anyone help me install it? I just need to get the hang of installing stuff on linux and ill be fine. PS: Perhaps you can give me links to good tutorials or something. :) :newbie: |
installpkg swaret-version-noarch-build.tgz
:) In other words, just type installpkg filename for this, and any other slackware package. |
ah "doh!".. I remember now! It told me to edit the file....
Okay.. i think im doing it.. i updated swaret and now im updating the packages.. well its getting them i think.. is there anything else i have to do? my friend told me to type this command last time.. oh well if thats all that needs to be done.. ill wait I also seem to remember that the list of packages to update was a lot longer last time |
If it's the first time you're installing swaret, you should rename the /etc/swaret.conf.new file to /etc/swaret.conf
You should then edit the file a bit, like moving the faster ftp mirrors to the top of your list, finalize the exclude list, etc. It's also recommended that you not run swaret under GUI, especially if you're update XFree86 related packages, and desktop environments or window managers. |
Also, just in case, remember to edit the appropriate LANG (for language) file and place it in the /etc/ directory along with your edited /swaret.conf.
Good luck and have fun... Swaret rocks! Best regards... |
Get the latest swaret (1.6.2) from http://www.swaret.org as some recent changes to the mirror files broke earlier versions.
You have to choose your version of Slackware. swaret.conf.new defaults to VERSION=9.1 you may want to change this to VERSION=current and this then will show a lot more packages The commands are: swaret --update swaret --upgrade . #note the dot This will NOT fetch the new 2.4.25 kernel packages as these are excluded |
question..i installed swaret and did everything i was supposed to do. but when i:
swaret --upgrade gaim it finds it...installs it and says im missing libraries.. xfree86-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* (size of file) xfree86-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* (size of file) xfree86-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* (size of file) xfree86-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* (size of file) basically in that format. now the top most one didnt look like a library..it looked as if swaret was upgrading to a newer version of xfree86. is this REALLY necessary? edit: nm people...updated anyway..couldnt use ATI drivers and it took me 20 mins to figure out why it said "no screens found" LOL.. |
