Installing slackware on an PC without internet.
 

Hey, I'm planning on installing slackware on an old PC without any access to the internet, but I was wondering if all the things that I would need is on these 4 iso's(http://www.slackware.com/getslack/torrents.php ), or if I need to download anything else before I start.

The PC is a Compaq Presario 5240, with 112MB Ram a 400MHz amd k6-2 processor, and a total of 12 GB harddisk space.

You only need the first two isos, the others contain source packages. Slackware doesn't ship with as many packages as other distros, but the first two cd's should have ample apps for most people.

My Slackbox is an old Dell XPS-T500 which, for reasons both deeply philosophical and darkly mystical, I am currently running without internet access (ok, fine, I admit it-- I am one of the pathetic few who still do not have internet access at home! :)).
I am very pleased with how my Slack 10.1 install has gone; I am still working out some of the finer configuration details, but, with the sole exception of the drivers for my Conexant HCF modem (which I can't use because I use my cell as my home phone, and therefore have no landline, which leads to no internet access...starts to make sense, doesn't it, but it's still sad. Forgive my digressions, I have ADHD and sometimes it gets ahead of me), I have not needed to download anything to get my box to go. I don't have the latest-and-greatest of anything, and I do need to get OpenOffice because Kspreadsheet and my wife don't always play well together (and windoze and I get along like Palestine and Israel, which limits the dual-boot option), so there have been some minor convenience issues, but nothing major.

ok, it sounds good, I just wanted to make sure that I didn't needed to download lots of different apps and their dependencies to get myself a working system.

Success, I installed slackware without any problems, all my hardware was supported, now I just need to figure out how to make it power off automatically. But not a major issue.

Heh, yeah...that's one that's being worked on by a few people around here atm. All you should have to do is download the acpi patch for your kernel, patch said kernel , etc, etc...but... Slack 10 comes with 2.4.26 as the default kernel, and the acpi patches start at 2.4.27 and go up from there. So I'm somewhat wary.

You may have better luck, depending on which version of Slack you installed and which kernel you're running.

I installed 10.1, and my hardware uses apm not acpi(as far as I know), cause it closed down propely when I modprope apm and start the service apmd.

you can uncomment the "modprobe apm" line in /etc/rc.d/rc/modules,
so it loads at boot time.

I'm hooked on phonics (works for me) with the optional 2.6.10 kernel you can find under "testing"

I'm also using acpi, though.;)
