Installing Slackware!!!
 

Ok, well i just got slackware (tired of windows's) and i was trying to install it on my Compaq Presario, for the first time. I put the cd i burnt from the iso; booted slackware, made my partitions, and then jumped to the setup screen. I then set my swap, my target and software to install. Was sent to the install section where i continued the installation process. The installation went bad from here; Getting an "Insert Disk" error, then all of the sudden a message saying "Installation Complete." I know that an operatining system can't install in a matter of seconds and so im pretty sure i screwed up. To further my problems, i get a blank screen after my Compaq splash screen. I can access my computer setup by hitting [F10], but as far as that im stuck. If you could help me out, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post. And no, i dont think I installed Lilo =). Thanks in advance.

From the steps you mentioned it sounds like it didn't have a source for the packages to install. That is one of the steps where it would search for the source CD. It would mount it on /cdrom which is really a link to something like /var/mount/something. You should be able to reboot the CD and verify your partitions, etc. and run setup again. Go through all the stpes again. When it comes time to start the installation, switch to the second conolse screen. [ctrl][alt]F2] Press a enter to activate the console and then type "df" or "mount" to display the devices that are mounted. Your root file system is a ram disk, but the source should the cd device, like /dev/hdd or /dev/hdc, etc. I woud think it should be mounted. It might also have the desitination mounted as well, like /dev/hda2 or /dev/hda1, etc.

See what you are able to determine waht might be missing. There is also another command to see any recent errors, "dmesg" that will report the kernel ring buffer. The last messages will be any errors that might be causing the problem. Like the file system is not formatted or a bad CD, etc.

k, well it cant even get the cd to boot any more.... at all, so im buring a new iso at a slower speed, to reduce the cance of any erros. Should be done within 30-45 minutes... see if that might work for me... but idk

Requires 700 MByte CDR. A 650 MB will not hold the image.
