Installing Slackware 13.1 x86_64
 

I have just been forced into upgrading my mother board and cpu so now own a x86 cpu and was thinking i would give the x86_64 Slackware a try.

I realize that i need to do a reinstall but can i save my /home partition? Will that save my settings or am i asking for problems?

I assume i can just drop all of my config files into the new install as well.

From theoretical point, files in $HOME/.config tent to be less cpu specific than /etc. But Config files from different versions of software will give you headache (KDE4 does not like KDE3 config files etc.). Maybe best way to go is to save your configs in /etc and then use ones you can from them later.

And your /home can move on to new versions without much problem except configs in user home dirs. I had a home dir moved on to three different Slackware Versions over the years then Motherboard died. So Just don't throw the old configs at the new system.

Your /home directory will work just fine with both 32-bit and 64-bit, well it does here anyway.

Thank you both, i am just finishing up backing things up then will repartition and install.

Well that was quicker than i expected, it took me longer to resolve some permission issues in my home dir which where stopping x starting than it did to run the install.

Firefox has logged me in and loaded this page so all is looking well, just hoping getting everything else set up is as simple.
