Installing Slack 9.0 on an external USB hard drive
 

Questions of the day, I just got a new computer and im trying to install slack 9.0 on a Toshiba 40gb notebook hard drive mounted in a USB 2.0 external case. how would i go about getting a slack iso CD to recognize this hard drive? are there any special boot disks for this kind of hardware?

Use a RUNT (slack9.1) boot disk which will load usb modules for you. Or after booting with CD, load USB modules before running setup.
Another idea, use the zipslack.img bootdisk since zipslack includes usb support.

i looked in the slackware 9.1 folder on a ftp site but couldn't find any RUNT bootdisk (im very new to linux so it runt just stands for somthing please let me know) i also checked the slack 10 bootdisks and again found nothing,,, and there is no documentation on the slack website that says anything about USB 2 support with any of the boot disks. any ideas?

I know that Slackware 10.0 install disk recognises USB harddisk!

Infact this is how I backup data from crippled Operating Systems.

I am not sure whether it is supported by the default kernel of Slackware 9.0 But there is no harm trying.

Steps:
1. Boot-up Slackware 9.0 Install Disk 1
2. do the necessary (login)
3. fdisk /dev/sda

IF you get the normal fdisk menu, then just go ahead and partition it as you wish. Commit the partition and start installation (setup)

IF you get some error message saying that device do not exist, THEN you have some hacking to do.

What you need is A bootdisk which supports USB Mass Storage kernel and the rest of your hardware on your lappy.

To do this, please search the forum on how to create the bootdisk. You will also need 2 other disks, install.1 and isntall.2 this can be obtain from the rootdisks folder in your CD.

My advise is, just go for Slackware 10.0 :)

You can just use bare.i from Slackware 10.0 since it supports USB mass storage.

RUNT Linux is a separate distro based on ZipSlack. just google for RUNT linux and garb their boot floppy image and the prog rawrite(for win). under win, use rawrite to burn the floppy.
