Another issue here is that when I plugin my external HD it pops up, but when I open it up in Dolphin it says "Could not enter folder /mnt/hd"

Is there a way to set it so that my normal user account can access the device that I mount?
As root, run:
Code:
for x in audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner; do gpasswd -a <your_user_id_here> $x; done
That command will not wipe out any of your current group assignments. It will add you to any of those groups to which you do not currently belong.

The slackbook & the slackbuilds.org documentation on how to build packages.
But beforehand, investigate the slackware documentation & packages. eg. here: http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/slackware-13.0/
