for the 2.6 test kernel on slack 10.2 cd you do the followings:
1. boot Slackware CD 1
2. at boot prompt you type: test26.s and then press enter
3. After installation is done, when asked about what kernel you want to use just find the Skip option and keep the test26.s kernel used at boot.
4. after everything is installed and configured, boot your slackware system, instert Slackware CD 2, go to testing directory, install the kernel-modules and alsa-driver for the 2.6.13 kernel.
5. Reboot and if done correctly, enjoy!

Interesting post, thank you, nykey!
Could you provide a bit more detail on step #4? That is, are you doing that at a shell prompt or using the setup utility? If so what commands do you use to initiate this? Are you cding to the testing directory? This has always mystified me.
Thanks for any and all answers.

Well, you see, when you install the test26.s kernel most of the times, if not all of the time only the kernel's image is copied and installed, so you don't have any modules (and we all know that install kernels are mostly made of modules, so they can work from the box on all, or most pc configurations), you don't have the kernel's source directory in /usr/src in case you want to recompile it, no headers, no alsa-driver for your kernel version=no sound. So, after you install slack (just like you would had installed it using the bare.i kernel) just boot into your new slackware install, insert Slackware CD 2 into your CD-ROM drive, mount it, cd to it, then cd to testing directory, there you will have the needed packages for your kernel (alsa-driver, kernel-generic, kernel-headers, kernel-modules and kernel-source) install everything there using installpkg or pkgtool except for kernel-generic, which is already installed by the test26.s boot option and the choice you made during install. Then reboot and check if everything is working, if not... make them work , Cheers.

Heh, don't mention it, that's what all this is about. If you try it, don't forget to post back if it worked or not for you.

I will indeed post back if this works for me. I'm away from my Linux boxes on vacation right now, but, will attempt this in August when I'm home again. I've book-marked this thread, archived it for future reference.
I sometimes feel stupid asking what must be obvious questions to the other Unix gods here.
This is the best forum on the Internet!
Thanks!

I tought I've been pretty clear and did my best to help you, but if you can't express yourself in such a manner that everyone can understand exactly what you need and want, I cannot be very precise, now YOU GOT THE POINT ?

If you already have 2.4 installed, and Slackware is working, mount cd1 (if not mounted), and go to its directory
Example
Code:
cd /mnt/cdrom
Then go to the /testing/linux-2.6.xx directory
Code:
cd testing/linux-2.6*
Then run pkgtool and install 'from current directory'.
Install the 2.6 kernel, source, and modules.
Then alsa from the same directory.
Exit pkgtool, then check that your /etc/lilo.conf contains the new kernel (check the booting kernel is the one for 2.6 in /boot - check the symlinks for vmlinuz to make sure)

Reboot, and it should work

If not, search this forum for solutions.

The above has been posted hundreds of times. You would have saved alot of aggravation on your part, and on others, if you would do a forum search first.

Personally, I would leave the kernel in there to be honest. Becuase you may mess with the source that slackware was compiled off of. I could be wrong, but I keep messing up my computer whenever I removed pat's default source files, and just use my own in there for additional kernel compiles down the road
