Installing Gnome desktop packages

Hi,

I recently installed Slackware 9.1 from a Linux Format CD 1.
It came with KDE rather than Gnome and I would now like to add the gnome dektop.
I have downloaded all the packages and run the installer on all of them and then I changed my desktop to Gnome.
On start x I get a freeze-up and some errors about it having tried to start many times. Its actually the Windowmaker desktop in the background.

My question.
What is a good way to install these gnome packages?
I have all of them from the gnome folder, so could I still be missing something? or is there something like a suseconfig I need to run?
I am just now going over the Slackware book and am rather new.

dumb or ill,

Thanks

"I have all of them from the gnome folder, so could I still be missing something?"
Yes. there are some libraries that Gnome depends on that you need to install. I don't remember their names off the top of my head.

" or is there something like a suseconfig I need to run?"

In addition to installing the software you need to change some scripts and configuration files for gdm or kdm or whatever and .xinitrc. Yes, these changes are the sort of thing that suseconfig did for you but in Slackware you are on your own.

Maybe try running xwmconfig, if you installed the slackware packages for gnome then it should detect it and let you choose which wm/desktop you want and set up .xinitrc for you.

You can also try dropline-gnome at dropline.net/gnome. They have an installer that will download and install gnome for you as well as keep it up to date.

It may be missing some of the lib files.

Thanks yes I did xwmconfig for Gnome.
If I understand corectly this is all I should have to do to configure new desktop as xwmconfig sets .xinitrc.

I must be missing libs, but I thought these were all in the /gnome package folder. I'll try dropline.

Does anyone have any special way they check for dependencires?

Thanks

I'm going to stick my face in the book tonight.
(so far i like this) coming from SuSE : slackware feels logical and structured: actually simpler. ...I hope
