Thank you. Turned off desktop effects and things seem to be smoother now. What is the gallium radeon driver and where do I get it?

Thanks for your help

Sorry, I have waded in and out of this thread ever since the big update killed my desktop. Once again, I was finally able to restore most things (although I did a "clean system" with Slackpkg and removed all the apps I had installed. No big deal really. Since I turned off desktop effects which I never really cared for anyway, everything seems to be fine. I have a new install of KDE 4.5.1, which isn't the latest but is fine.

I missed that post. But, I guess I will keep things as they are since it is now working with the radeon driver.

Thanks again for your help.

Bob

sometimes it is easier to open the doinstall script and see what happens

as was brought up earlier

@Didier_Spaier - One other thought is to check ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc in the [Compositing] section. I have Backend=Xrender for the nouveau driver.
Then as I said way back Bob.

but the next problem is the setting for composite kwin desktop when you do that it goes blank then goes black. I had to go in even though I was using nvidia and set it to direct render then it failed nice then reset to openglx and it is fixed. this is a kwin problem after the last upgrade and it did it for 4.5.1 to 4.5.3 . it has to do with kwin composite setting.
I also noted there was a update in xsessions and would not take effect unless you changed from original to new config.
as stated I had this problem with all the desktops from 4.5.1 to 4.5.3

finally updated to current (Dec 4). had issues with KDE crashing back to the login screen but solved it by removing my previous xorg.conf configuration. these are the steps i took (followed from alienbob's instructions)

1. slackpkg clean-system (remember to DESELECT packages you built yourself)
2. slackpkg install-new
3. slackpkg upgrade-all
4. reinstalled multilib packages for -current
5. reverted from mesa 7.9 to mesa 7.8.2 package (i'm using radeon x1700 (r500), doesn't seem to work with mesa 7.9)

everything seems to be working smoothly now. hope others will find this info useful...thanks again to the whole slackware team and community!

EDIT:
kde is still crashing, for unknown reasons. kms solves the problem, as mentioned in the thread, but is slightly annoying as it has some slight flickering issues (with kwin compositing). any ideas on how to solve kms+kwin flickering problems?

try turn off the composing, this fix for me the crash issue.
The crash happen to me when i minimize a program, than when i try restore it, the kde just crash back to the shell.
I think this issue start with the kde 4.5.4, i don't remember have it with 4.5.1 or 4.5.3(from alienBOB)
Using mesa 7.8.2 too, because my ati x1900xtx.

I lost x. If I switch over to the vesa or nv drivers I can get to the KDE login screen (it crashes during the splash), but the Nvidia drivers aren't working at all. I've never been able to get the nouveau drivers to work

Never mind; fixed. I don't know why I had to re-install the nvidia drivers 3 times to make it go...

I wonder if any one looks at the install script. It is why we use linux we know exactly what is going on. /.kde/share/config/kwinrc is set to openGL. the new xorg has different symbolic links for kwin composite . For Nvidia display card systems you need to disable kwin upgrade to current and then uninstall the Nvidia driver completely.
Then reinstall to create the correct symbolic links for the nvidia driver.
If you do a fresh install you will not have a problem.
The fact is nouveau is part of the kernel and is part of xorg. so you will be seeing these problems in the future as nouveau matures

If you mean the script that makes ~/kde/share/config/kwinrc written at KDE startup if not already present, I am looking for it , any clue ? Or is it a default in kwin ? - I could'nt find it in the source, either

Other than that I can confirm that KDE crashes at startup unless I use the nouveau driver (I have a nVidia GPU) in Slackware-current, see here :

i can confirm that either turning off compositing or using KMS fixes this issue. not sure if this is caused by kde 4.5.4 or xorg updates to -current..i'll revert to 4.5.3 later and see if the problem persists

I have had no problems whatsoever with 4.5.4. I am running the proprietary NVIDIA driver and I didn't have to reinstall it. I was already running Alien BOB's 4.5.3 if that matters.
