Installed everything ok.... weird LAN problem......
ok i have slackware 10.1 running KDE..... im a total linux noob and this is my first time using linux lol
well after much fiddling around with stuff, i finaly got slackware installed and got logged in etc and i cant seem to use the internet.....
Im using a PCMCIA ethernet card and it HAS been detected, the light is on on the card and when i did a modprobe command (cand remember what it was) but it showed that my card had been detected and that everything was correct
but it just wont seem to work =/
(P.S when setting up, i chose the "loopback" option as recommended by the setup for users with dialup modems, no connection and PCMCIA cards)
Run: /sbin/ifconfig | grep eth
If you see some output then your card is correctly detected.
What we need to know to help you is how do you connect...
Are you connecting to a router, to DSL (using PPPoE?), dial-up, cable?
first i typed "/sbin/ifconfig grep eth" (i couldnt find the | key because its an american keyboard map for a UK keyboard, i know theres probably a commend to change that but .... oh well.... lol). anyway, the outcome of that was:
"eth Host name lookup failed"
-----
after that i tried a little something extra, i just typed "/sbin/ifconfig" which came up with:
"
Link encap: local loopback
Inet addr: 127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0
UP loopback running MTU: 16436
RX packets:2 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 frame: 0
TX packets:2 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0 collisons: 0
RX bytes: 100(100.0 b)
TX bytes: 100(100.0 b)
"
there....
now i think i shouldve not listened to what the setup recommended and chose to obtain info from DHCP (i think there was an option similar to that) as my router supports DHCP. - but im no expert.....
run pkgtool, select run setup, choose network config, select yes for use dhcp
alternatively you can use netconfig, and go straight to network configuration
