Unhappy Installation success = failure ??

Ok this is what happened I partioned my hardrive its a 40gb into two 20gigs approximately. stuck a windows instillation on there then I loaded up my nice slack cd's ( 6 in total but only 3 to install ?) i downloaded from the web everything seemed like it was going great after extensive reading and kept saying I was going to do it I was finnally doing it. I red a millions of times about the the partitioning so i logged on to root. Made a swap partition of 2gs and made the primary partition 18gis so here we go... Targeted the 18gig partition did a full install followed the prompts accordingly. Although I had concerns about making mistakes since I installed Windows first and would I write over it in some retarded way I installed lilo everything was smooth. I was wondering why disk 4-6 were not promted to install I started to get concerned at this point. Well everything was finished to my surpised everything seemed like everything was well I had my sexy SLACKWARE! big logo on load up and in the corner i had load windows or linux was extremely pleased. I click linux signed on to root. got a new mail I don't see how since I did not even connect it to the internet as yet. typed startx. Then 3 dialog boxes appear one says "login" one says xtren and one looks like a clock. Login and xtern both say "bash-3.1 #" and it seems as though I am suppose to type something what now? I was expecting maying KDE or something to be loading up.

please help

Sounds like you need to select the appropriate window manager you want to use.

From the command line run "xwmconfig" and select the window manager you want to run<ie. KDE/XFCE/etc...>

Then try startx again and you will get what your looking for.

You only need discs 1-3 for a full Slackware install. Discs 4-6 are mostly source code for discs 1-3.
http://slackware.com/getslack/torrents.php
There are some extra programs you may want in the /extra directory on disc 4:
http://slackware.oregonstate.edu/slackware-12.1/extra/ You can install them if you cd (change directory) into the /extra directory and type as root "installpkg pkg_name.tgz".
Otherwise, if you installed discs 1-3 you are good to go.

I mean I downloaded all the cd's and put them all on cd's just not sure what I was suppose to be doing with them. But if I don't need them since i put cd 1-3 on i guess i could save them together. How do I get the information needed off disk 4?

If you put CD #4 into the cdrom drive it should automount on the desktop. Just right-click on the CD icon and open it. You should then be able to copy any of the programs in /extra to your home direcory, or cd into the directory created in /media when the CD mounts. Either way, if you open a terminal, cd into the directory where the programs are, become root, and do: "installpkg package_name.tgz" and the program will install.

You can also get lots of extra programs for Slackware at http://slackbuilds.org/. Read the how-to for how to use the slackbuilds.

If you have not read it already, read the Slackware book for getting started with Slackware: http://slackbook.org/
