Installation and Noobie questions...

Ok I will make this short and sweet...

I'm trying to install Slackware 10.1 but it won't boot, it finishes, and when it gets to booting the hd it does nothing. Now I've had it working before but I moved back to windows now I'm back for another try. My specs are
Processor: AMD 2600+
MoBo: ABiT NF7-S
RAM: 512mb
Graphics Card: Radeon 9600 pro 128mb
Onboard sound and network.
Now I don't know what kernel I should use, or how to set up my network, if I could just get it to boot I'd be happy...I would try a noob friendly distro but none look as comfortable as slackware.

Expect to hear more from me as I get this rolling...

You didn't mention what is your hard-drive and cdrom.

Linux_n00b_57 03-12-2006 04:49 PM

Well my Hard Drive is really old, 7.4 GB(it's just a spare i'm installing it on), and two CD-Roms, both AOpen, one is a DVD burner, 16x, 8x, 48x, and the other is a CD Burner 52x

Does your machine hang or black screen come?Do you get any error while booting? Maybe this would help:ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...re/BOOTING.TXT

I was installing slack on my laptop tuther day and couldn't figure out why it wasn't booting, until I remembered that during installation I had whizzed through the bit about where to install lilo. The default is the root partition i think, but in my case I needed it on the MBR.
Just a thought.........

Cheers

Ya i missed the error about Lilo not installing properly...So I fixed it...

So now for the noob questions!

Umm I don't know how to configure...
1.My network to get online
2."X"
3.A new user so I don't use the root all the time, yet still have that new user to be able to mnt and unmnt cds and other basic things.
4.How to get it to say Darkstar instead of Home...I like Darkstar better...

And finally...
How to get my Sata HD on Lilo so I can boot XP at the beginning.

Thanks for the help so far.

Linux_n00b_57 03-12-2006 05:51 PM

If I could get it working online the rest of the configuration would happen so much faster.

dcdbutler 03-12-2006 06:04 PM

try this for starters

# netconfig

and type the stuff that applies to you

ilubtofart 03-12-2006 06:27 PM

netconfig would take care of #1 and #4.
xorgconfig for #2.
adduser for #3.

Have fun :)

Linux_n00b_57 03-12-2006 07:01 PM

Ok, well it's still not working, can someone step me through the configuration?
With adduser can you control what the user can and cannot do?
I now have "X" configured :)
Is there a way to upgrade to 10.2 without getting the entire distro?

Linux_n00b_57 03-12-2006 07:06 PM

I'm also having problems with getting Lilo and Slackware to see my SATA drive...

Alien_Hominid 03-13-2006 12:58 AM

Use sata kernel.

Linux_n00b_57 03-13-2006 08:44 AM

Alright, how do I install the sata kernel without reinstalling linux?
Also I've been having problems mounting my Cd Drive and my Fat32 drive...Windows says the Fat32 drive is unformatted, is there some way to fix that?

Hi,

You could read some searches here on LQ for your problems!
The sticky's in this forum cover a lot of your questions.

You could read some on-line references. I would suggest you to read Shilo's refernce #11 in my sig. Several in my sig are noob feed.

I'll check them out, thanks...
PS. Google didn't help me.
