LinuxQuestions.org - Install without removable media

I tried everything I could to get Slack installed without removable media. Even got the thing booted into the install okay (using this: h t tp://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html) Then I ran into a problem. I couldn't get my network recognized for a network install, and couldn't get it to load off of a usb mp3 player. Then, of course, my windows was ruined because I already formatted, etc. So, I was left with this last resort. I'll post links to some pics shortly. Quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever had to do.

In more detail, I received a Compaq Evo D510 for free, but it didn't come with a cd-rom drive. I get on the inside of it to see if I can hook one up. No luck, because it only has enough power connectors from the power supply for the motherboard and it's hard drive (uses some kind of slim cd-rom drive, that you can buy from hp for like $50+). So, instead, I hook up a second tower that doesn't work, but still gives off power. I use it to power the cd-rom and the regular power supply for the hard drive. I replace the single drive cable with one that has both a master and a slave connector. Set both drives to cable select. Fire up the token power supply, then the actual computer. Install goes without a hitch. Like I said, not exactly routine, but it got the job done!

Just thought I'd share this story with you guys. I'll probably be around a lot more now that I have a Linux box up and running again! Thanks for listening.
