Well, I just looked at /etc/fonts/fonts.conf (which determines which directories a stock install of Slackware will recursively search for new fonts), and it doesn't list /usr/share/fonts/truetype. So no, that won't work.
Copying the msttcorefonts directory to /usr/share/fonts/TTF (so that you get /usr/share/fonts/TTF/msttcorefonts) will work, though, because /usr/share/fonts/TTF is listed.
Run fc-cache to refresh Fontconfig after copying, and you'll see them.
