Install KDE? I skipped it during installation

Howdy y'all,

I'm having a good time with Slackware; now that I've gotten the internet connection up thanks to the serialmonkey rt73-CVS driver.

I decided not to install KDE; I love KDE (keep reading) however I already have a main distro with KDE and do most everything in Slackware from the command line. I've been using Enlightenment DR17 and really like the look and feel. I have a bone to pick with Eterm, but that's another thread ;)

However, there are a number of applications in KDE that I would like to have as conveniences, the big one being Amarok -- I like to listen to the tunes while I do my work -- doing serious work is what I got slackware for. Some of you have probably read about or taken part in my discussion of using a graphical login manager (tried XDM, tried qingy).

So, this morning I installed Amarok off CD #2 and I had to adjust my path to include /opt/kde/bin/, then it came up with a dependency problem; OF COURSE! it depends on the KDE libraries.

So, should I install KDE? How would I go about that? I tried

ls /mnt/cdrom/slackware/kde/|grep .+tgz\b -|installpkg -

and got "filename does not end in .tgz" HOw do I install the whole damn show?

Alternatively, could I just install the libraries? How do I get at those and which ones do I need?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Joel

Try just installing Qt and see if that's enough..

If you want to stay with the command shell,
grab DCD and VLPLAYCD from Vector Linux
version 3.2 ... these should work with
Slackware.

I installed the libraries and Amarok works rather righteously. I'm spending most of my time in X now to make multitasking easier -- I write with LaTeX and check my work as I go, so xdvi is pretty darn important.

The challenge now to "overall look and feel" is that the Enlightenment themes appear to only apply to the desktop and Eterm -- unlike in KDE where the whole window theme changes when you change themes. So, I have these beautiful black title bars and the unappealing grey or beige of the rest of the window frame. I can fix Firefox with a theme, the rest stay the same.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd love to change things up.

Thanks,
Joel

This is awesome. One of my threads has been quoted and used by someone else. Thanks. This thread really made my day. Cool!
