what did you upgrade?
everything? you might have to roll back the packages.... |
my slackware was almost current, last updated about week ago
my machine is file server (samba,...) no x how can i roll back the packages if i cannot login to system? |
Since you can post, I assume you have access to at least some computer - Mutagenix (http://mutagenix.org) is a wonderful rescue disc (always worked wonders for me, at least): boot off of any of the available livecds, and all of your standard partitions should be sitting and waiting for you to mount by hand in the /mnt dir once you're in (if memory serves, don't even have to define them - just "cd /mnt; mount hda1" or whatever) -- the downside to this being that the automatic package management tools will probably just screw things up more, since nothing will be where it's supposed to be...
I used swaret once, and frankly, it didn't screw my system up nearly as badly as yours seems to have ended up, but it broke so much I just did a fresh install. A lot of people seem to love it, but once was more than enough for me to decide slapt-get is my preference... Personally I'd boot from the mutagenix disc (try the smallest one, so that you aren't stuck with a locked CD-ROM [hit F1 at boot I think, and look for the option to load the disc into RAM]), throw in my slack installation disc, find the agetty binary, and overwrite whatever's there now with the one that came with Slackware... and try a reboot without the disc. Could also try changing your /etc/inittab so that your default run level at boot up is 4 (I've never set it that way, but it may bypass the problem you're having by going straight to the X session manager instead of the CLI apps). Hope you figure it out without losing what's on your disk; good luck. |
thx for advices!
the server is still waiting me to fix it, otherwise still working as should, just i cant login to it i'll have to wait until nobody is using it be good... |
