Question I'm buying a new LCD Monitor today- need advice please:-)

Hello,

I've been running Slackware for a few years and love it. Over the last few years I've run Slackware with older CRT monitors. I'm going to buy a new 17" LCD monitor today. I will of course read the specifications carefully. When I'm at run level three which do you think would be the safest course of action to use to set-up my monitor? Should I run xorgconfig or xorgsetup? I've never used a LCD monitor before with Slackware. I'm running Slackware 11.0 (2.6.18).
Thank you for any and all replies.

I would edit xorg.conf by hand to make sure that the refresh rates are right (and the display size, but I think refresh rates are more critical). Get the values from your new lcd's manual or handbook (you may need to start up one last time your crt monitor to read the probably supplied pdf handbook) and replace the old ones. That's the way I did it and it was really no problem at all.

All right, thanks. I'll run xorgconfig and enter the values myself after checking the monitor manual. I'm also downloading Knoppix 5.0 right now to run as a monitor test and see what KDE in Knoppix sets for the monitor.
Thanks, man:-)

what i usually do is load knoppix and copy out xorg.conf that it generates then integrate it with slackware's xorg. they are pretty much the same.

Thanks titopoquito and slackamp:-)
My new 17" LCD monitor is installed..........it sure is perdy:-)
I downloaded Knoppix 5.0.1 this morning and used that to help me re-write xorgconfig.
I love the fact that you can swiftly switch hardware components in Slackware. Simple, clean, no fuss, no muss. I love Slackware:-)

Just a quick reminder: If you happen to be a gamer (specially fps) setting the refresh rate as high as allowed by your monitor specifications will improve enjoyment/performance and reduce eye strain (maybe applies to everything). Good luck

I humbly submit that in the future, anyone trying to set up graphics on a Slackware box might want to use Slax (it's Slackware, live!) over Knoppix (Debian is fine, I'm sure, but it ain't Slackware.)
