ifconfig doesn't show any eth devices

Hi, I just installed the newest 2.6 test kernel, and everything seems to be going fine except that when I run ifconfig, none of my eth devices are showing.....Is there something in the kernel i forgot to say yes to, or startup? When i boot up in my older kernels, the ethernet devices show up just fine. Thanks in advance.

Look for the module for your ethernet card in /lib/modules/2.6.* - if it isn't there
(and you didn't compile it into the kernel) you'll have to repeat the
process and add support for your ethernet card.
If it is in /lib/modules - try loading it with /sbin/modprobe.

Okay, I was able to recompile and get my eth0 detected, but still no eth1. In /lib/modules/2.6.*, what am I supposed to look for? In drivers/net/wireless, it seems to have detected my wireless files, but is there another place i have to look into/load something else to install eth1? Btw, eth1 is my wireless card, while eth0 is my ethernet.

Modprobe, and ifup/ifdown

What happens when you:
ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

Any errors? How about in /var/log/syslog

I remember that at times (using a 2.4 kernel) if I forget the
Networking-->Socket Filtering (and other) sections in my kernel compilations, then the dhclient would not work, and any devices getting addresses assigned from DHCP would not come up, but were fairly silent about errors. Any chance that this might be your problem?

ahh..yes....i have some errors in /var/log/syslog:

orinoco_cs: Failed to set parameters on eth1
eth1: Error - 16 shutting down Hermes chipset
eth1: Error - 16 shutting down Hermes chipset

Although I'm not really sure how syslog works.....Is it rewritten every time the system boots up, or is the log file just appended every time? Because there is only one instance of this error message, and it doesn't seem to be at the end of the syslog - maybe it's an old error? If that's the case, can you tell me what I might in the kernel I might need to set, that I might have forgotten? Thanks

heh, there are dates beside the logs; it doesn't look like there are any error messages regarding my wireless driver or lack of detection of eth1 on my last bootup...
