ide-disk driver problem
 

I just tried installing slackware 9.1 on a new server that i just recieved (my first ever from my school. I tried installing slackware but after booting from the cd a lot of text scrolled by (the normal) and then it got stuck on

hde: attached ide-disk driver

it just stays there.. does anyone have any idea what is causing this problem:Pengy:

1) list all your hardware drives like I have 2 ide drives or I have 6 scsi drives or usb etc

source file is /etc/fstab maybe?

2) You appear to say you "installed" and then say you 'booted from cd", did you install or is this message you are getting occur during the install?

If you installed, which kernel type did you elect to install?
slackware 9.1 has a list of kernels browserable from another computer so see if you can spot the one you used please.

3) just a wild guess that you installed a kernel not suited to your hardware.
Can you get a knoppix cd and run that and see what your server's hardware is detected as?

Well I just recieved the box and i put the slackware installation cd and it says hde: attached ide-disk driver

I believe it is because of SATA so i have disabled that and try again tomorrow

summary SATA drives appear to be your problem. I don't have any sorry.

if you burn from the current iso set you have kernel 2.6.x whereas if you burn from 9.1 proper you will have 2.4.x and may get some joy.

As you are currently a newbie, (so am i at most things) kernel re-compile is not super easy.

You may want to have a look at searching this forum for keyword sata and mandrake or another distro to see if they have got it together better?

Well I may have solved my problem by going into the BIOS and disabling SATA and making it ATA... Ill do this.. then install slackware.. compile the kernel (there are guides) and then re enable SATA
