Question Icons that don't work

As you may be aware, the "Start Here" icon present on the Gnome desktop in Slackware 10 also appears on the KDE desktop but does nothing. I have now created shortcut icons to my various devices (eg. CD-ROM, floppy etc) in KDE and find that they also appear when I run Gnome but are about as much use as a chocolate kettle in that desktop.
Can anyone suggest how I can make these icons work in the respective desktops? Or if not, can I hide the ones that don't work?
