as a follow up..

the raid.s kernal seems to be the answer for slack 9.1 on the x335 (and I expect other xSeries machines as well).

I used the ISO images to make my install cd's, booted with the raid.s, used cfdisk to make my partitions, and did a full install (including kde/gnome on second disk). Everything seemed to install fine.

This was an IBM x335, 2 xeon 2.0ghz processors, 1gb ram, 1 Ultra320 36gb drive.
