I still hold the view that the problem is related to your window-manager setup. If you see the mouse pointer that means X is up and running. But I don't how why trying twm and coming back to fluxbox did the trick. Perhaps some faulty script got overwritten correctly during this process -- but even this is unlikely as the bug would show itself in almost all installations. Well anyway, you finally got your system running alright, that's what matters .
