I did try without recompiling those packages. It went into the desktop but I had no keyboard or mouse input. I have a feeling I only needed to recompile evdev but I did all three anyway.

I also used patches provided by Matt(1337_powerslacker) rather than the ones I linked.

Thanks to all who helped!
Excellent. I'm glad the process went smoothly. Before I upgraded to Nvidia for my desktop, I was trying install Catalyst for my laptop (HP Envy 7227cl), and found that I was running into so much trouble after I attempted to install that I gave up and just used the FOSS drivers. For my laptop, which is going on 4 years old, this is an acceptable solution since for performance, I just use my desktop anyway.

One of the troubles I ran into was what you are describing; no mouse or keyboard input on my laptop. Sorry, I can't help you there.

I have an older Radeon HD 3000 in my desktop unit but I've never had any luck with the fglrx driver at all, even back when I had my Radeon 8500 years ago. AMD/ATi's offerings have been nothing but crap driverwise and the free driver for me has always worked better.

I can use the free driver far better. I've had to rebuild Mesa with OpenCL to allow games to work as well as load libtxc_dxtn for S3TC, and use driconf to set it up, but it works.

I can say this, if you game, choose Nvidia.
