I've been running KDE all along. Using .37GiB of 2.0GiB with just firefox, thunderbird and ksysguard open on my netbook as I type this.

I spent alot of time getting fluxbox set up just right for me, its definately been worth the effort.

KDE and Xfce will both be version 4.6 for a while then.

God I hope I don't install KDE by accident.. *shudder*...

Really? I tremble at the thought of Xfce...

-current does work extremely well.

I use Xfce and its functionality has been fine for a while now. I think Linux is getting pretty mature - I don't feel the need for significant new functionality. The reason for most of my upgrades is to support new hardware (my ATI Radeon HD 4670 finally works with -current). Security fixes are also a good reason to upgrade. I don't really need new features.

Early stable releases from KDE aren't so much stable as later ones, and have many bugs (it's no wonder, for such big project).

So what's the point to release new Slackware without any major change?

Don't excite so much - when 13.2 be ready, You will be announced and every Slacker on the World will be happy, but 'til its not happening, keep updated with current and don't play with the future ;) Carpe diem, Bro!

To me Xfce is VERY thin on features and even thinner on configurability. Just the fact that it's impossible to change the default file manager is, for me, a complete showstopper.

There is a slackbuild for this - I grabbed it through sbopkg. Just type xfe in the search bar of sbopkg.
I also use it in KDE.

Does stuff saved to the desktop still open with Thunar?

I dunno; KDE 4.5.0 was pretty solid right from the start. Here's hoping KDE 4.6.0 is the same way.

Why the KDE team is working on new versions and publish future updates?
Because of errors found, due to improvements in stability and a clean source of unwanted junk.
I found out about it personally when we started with KDE 4.5 from his early stable releases up to version 4.5.4 currently operated. Stability and quality of work has increased dramatically, especially using a desktop effects. Previously, I've often had various types of hangups and a slowdown in work, which resulted in the need to restart the whole system (because I could not go to the console.) Now, even a substantial burden on the system does not cause these symptoms, and work on my really comfortable.
I believe that the KDE team has learned a lot from their mistakes and wish them to be able to issue a version 4.6 stable enough, as far as the current 4.5.4. But I live in the reality and maybe I'm also a little pessimistic. Although I like to test the news ;)

As for the implementation of KDE 4.6 to Slackware, I think we know a little bit of Patric, and can be safely assumed that the KDE 4.6 comes officially in Slackware after KDE 4.6.3 have been released (well, maybe 4.6.2, but it is surely optimistic vision ;)). I'm skipping Alien's packages - these are unofficial (which does not detract from the quality of them however - they has always been at the highest level;))

Skipping Alien's packages means missing out on some good stuff. For instance, if you're running Slackware 13.1 with KDE 4.4.3 you'll find activities virtually unusable due to bugs... the problems are solved in KDE 4.4.5, which you can get from Alien. I always run Alien KDE.

Ok, but Alien's packages aren't official and supported by Slackware team.
I'm also havily using alien's repository, so I don't skip them in my daily work - no. I was skipping them in previous post, because they aren't official!

I use Rox as my default filer on Xfce. No problem, just edit the default filer .desktop file from thunar to whatever you want. Easy to use Rox to set background/pinboard as well.

I'm in an apparent minority though that thinks that you can have too much configurability. I'd much rather devs spent there time on designing and building something to work as well as possible rather than offering loads of configurability options and leaving it all to the user.
Thats just me though, I don't want to start another kde flame session. I'll save that for the kde forums :)

Fair enough. Me, I'm a tweaker... If the working environment exhibits the smallest behavior that I don't like I have to try and find a solution (which is probably why I break so much stuff :) ). More often than not with Gnome or Xfce the answer is "that's just the way it is"... and I'm oughta there.

I'm also a multi-tasker, and the KDE activities have become indispensible to my workflow.
