I have Searched high and low on here and can't get a straight answer

IS it possible to have my slack start automatically into fluxbox or another "bare bones" window manager with out me logging in either at runlevel 3 or at xdm or gdm or kdm etc. is the KDE WM the ONLY WM that supports autologons???? Please help!

(yes i have tried runlevel 4 but it sits and waits for a password)

P.S

if the above cannot be done is there a way to successfully execute xinit from rc.local with out it erroring???

You could just use KDM to autologin to another WM.

-Set your computer up for init.4 and KDM
-when KDM starts select whichever WM as your session type...
-click yes when it asks to make it the default for the user
-then launch the KDE control panel from a shell in your WM of choice and set KDM to auto login your user...

works in thery. but I'm not gonna try it.

The above is the only way I think it would work. I can not think of any other way to do it.

hmmm...

why dont you jes not build a passwd

or go into passwd, and delete the encrypted area, and dont assign a pass

and yes be in runlevel 4

you will still be asked for a user name, say root or whatever else, but that is it

FYI GDM lets you autologin as well to whatever is your "default" window manager...
