I can't get an ipaddress in a non root user in slackware 9
 

When I installed slackware 9 on my laptop I was able to setup dhcp and when I would start up the machine and log into root I would get an IP Address and I would be able to surf the web. (yah) but if i log into the system as a normal user I don't have an ip address and I can't surf the web. help!

you should get an ip address before anyone can login during the boot up so it wouldnt matter if you were root or user.

login as your user and type
/sbin/ifconfig

see if you have a eth0 section if you do check the inet addr it will be on the 2nd line of eth0 section.

if you got that you have an ip address you probly havent set permissions to something and its denying you access to the www but you need to post more info. how do you connect to internet? ie. modem ppp network

.... yes I guess your right, my real question should be, how do I give a normal user rights to things like network cards. I am connecting to the internet via a dhcp router that is connected to a cable connection.

Uhm... you don't typically. What is it that your user will need to do? The DHCP lease should be aquired at boot time when dhcpcd starts, past this point it's all transparent.

Or have I missed something?

you shouldnt have to worry about permissions to a nic. more likely you have 'bad' permissions to your programs. when are you getting this problem?

netscape, galeon, gaim, ftp?

try "ncftp carroll.cac.psu.edu" from the console if you get ncftp: command not found try "ftp carroll.cac.psu.edu" and see if you get a connection. if you do then its the permissions on the programs you are trying to use if not .... ummm Are you behind a firewall?

well when I ping from root I can get a result, but when I ping from my normal user I can't get any response....

what about a ftp program ... ping is typically setuid if users can use it.
