Upon updating Mandrake 9.1 to 9.2, I noticed how large my install was. I decided to try something else. I first went to Fedora 0.95 (Red Hat). After installing what I thought was what I wanted, it turned out to be 2.5G installed! Dang. So I went to Gentoo. Started a stage 3 install, as I wasn't interested in waiting for KDE to compile. Well, even with a stage 3 install, emerge kde still had to download and compile some packages. Frustrated, I turned to Slack 9.1. I have tried it in the past, but at the time, it wasn't what I was looking for. This time, it's 100% of what I'm looking for. I installed everything I needed, and it was still WELL less than my old Mandrake system, even after getting Open Office 1.1 and J2RE.
This is what I have been looking for. It's pretty trim, despite recently moving to 2 CD's, which I hear has some people upset. It seems a tad faster than my old Mandrake, too. I really have to tip my hat to Patrick, as he really hit a home run with this one, IMHO. I am going to go ahead and buy a copy too!
I know this may sound weird, but I'm excited. I got all my software installed that I wanted. I figured out how to use swaret. This is awesome. I can say with 95% certainty that I will never use another distro.
Hmm I don't use another distro or OS period. I found slack7.0 after numerous problems with Mandrake and its automagic settings. Though I used to very found of Redhat I am not liking the avenue they have taken. Yea Slack Rocks! Once you learn to set it up, it is 100% rock solid, and what I have learned can be applied to lots of other *nix boxes.
