HP Printing (Specifically PSC) on Slackware

Hey folks,

I was wondering if anyone has had success setting up printing on slackware? I might have posted something like this a few months, but no one really answered my question. I had a working system going back then, before 2.6.9 crashed my system

I'm guessing we'll need hpijs, hpoj, and CUPS.

Last time I set it up, I would start the ptal-init daemon. It would print anything under a page. But if I had to print pdfs above 1 page, the printing process would just hang, including the paper inside it. I'd have to turn it off and restart slackware to getting the daemon up and running again. I hope some writes a HOW-TO. Until then, I'll be stuck with booting into windows and using Word to make documents. Not being able to print in Linux, doesn't give me any motivation to use Openoffice and that's a bad thing, because I'd like to unleash the power of Openoffice. Thanks.

BTW, I have a PSC 1315. It's a pretty new model and last time, I used the ppd for PSC 1300, but that's when it didn't work. Thanks.

I have a 1210 and have yet to try and set it up. From what I've found, this site seems to be our best bet.

Check out LinuxPrinting.org if you have not already done so. It's the one stop shop for drivers and tutorials when it comes to printing under Linux. Good luck with it -- J.W.

Those resource sites are too shallow for Slackware. That's the problem. They only support the bloatware distros. I thought some on the forum would have working guide that combines all the resources to get their printing to work. All I know is you should have:

hpijs
hpoj
CUPS

I think you can get it setup with that much. But can anyway tell me a detailed writeup about the init scripts involved etc?

I downloaded the new hplip last nite and installed it, after uninstalling hpijs. Never did install hpoj the last go round installing Slack after playing with some other distros.

This replaces hpijs and hpoj with one package.

http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/updates.php

Works like a charm with my PSC750.

Created a rc.hplip and put
Code:
/usr/local/hplip/hplip.sh start
in it. Edited the rc.M file for the hpoj to start hplip instead.

Hi,guys
I have one PSC2110 working on my slack 10.
This is what I did to make it working.
Installed hpoj-0.91 by
./configure && make && make install
ran
ptal-init setup
and configured the printer/scanner
Stopped the CUPS demon by
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups stop
waited for a couple of minutes, just to make sure the demon was actually stopped.
Restarted CUPS by
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
Once the demon was started configured CUPS through the web interface by Konqueror @
localhost:631
Important: take care selecting the ptal:usb:PSC_xxxx_Series as device. (replaced according to your model)
choosen the proper hpjs driver
tested scnning and printing functionalities were properly working.
Created the hpoj script in /etc/rc.d as follows

#!/bin/bash
# Script per inizializzare hpoj (ptal-init)
#
case "$1" in
'start')
/usr/sbin/ptal-init start ;;
'stop')
/usr/sbin/ptal-init stop ;;
'restart')
/usr/sbin/ptal-init restart ;;
*)
echo "utilizzo $0 start|stop|restart" ;;
esac
Thats all

Note: don't care about the notice ptal-init must be started before CUPS reported on hpoj instructions. On Slackwrae this does not work.
Hope this helps
Ciao

Curious, why all the suggestions to still use hpoj?

From what I gathered the hpijs team picked that project up and is now combining it making it and hpijs a single package, hplip.

Does it not work with this printer that's being asked about?

Is my hplip start script not "correct" for some reason? It works. Doesn't allways mean it's right though.

Thanks guys. I never knew about hplip until now. I thought I had to use hpijs and hpoj. Will definitely try this. Also, just to make sure, does hplip have support for the psc 1315. It's a new model. I was looking on the hpijs website for support and I could only find 1310. Has anyone tried it on a 1315? Thanks.
