HP COMPAQ NX6125 Problems with Speed

I have tried finding articles everywhere and just can't seem to find out why my linux box freezes while trying to open programs within KDE, Blackbox, etc.. It usually bogs down if i try to open firefox, or if i have amarok, or any other program but if i open usually two programs the mouse will freeze and I am unable to use any command until the program is up.

I have a HP COMPAQ NX6125
1.6 GHZ
1024 RAM
ati 200m(tried VESA and fglrx drivers)

any ideas would be appreciated
