how well does rpm2tgz work? do the packages converted always work correctly? or is it hit-and-miss like with alien?

I used it on LightScribe and it worked perfect.
I don't use it much now but when I first started running Slack I used it on a few packages and it always worked for me.

It's not so much the conversion between package formats but the fact that the contents may be in a slightly different directory layout or compiled against slightly different libraries, or software versions that will cause any problems - unless the rpm was specifically built for Slackware (which is unlikely).

I used it for the drivers for my Brother printer (printing and scanning), and it worked just fine - on several computers running both Slack and Vector.

FTR you can also use bsdtar which is part of the libarchive package to extract the RPM.

I think src2pkg can convert .rpms, and .debs, to Slackware packages.

Yes, src2pkg can convert them and will do a better job since it checks file and dir permissions, etc. I'd only use rpm2tgz to convert source archives.

I prefer to use gnashley's src2pkg utility; src2pkg is excellent.

can also put rpm in it's own directory and then

Code:
rpm2cpio package.rpm | cpio -vidm
and then use makepkg to create a tgz or txz package
