when you enter at init 3 you can type "xwmconfig" then select the other desktop environment that you want to use...then do "startx -- :1"

maybe you can use switchdesk [desktop name].
for example switchdesk kde --> to switch to kde... but you have to logout or maybe reboot ur pc so that when you log in.. u'll get ur desired desktop...

Just use the xwmconfig from level 3 per fireedo. You will not need to reboot (this isn't windows), simply do another startx then. And no it won't mess up anything. You will get a stray desktop icon on occasion that tries to carry over, but no big deal. I would urge everyone to try all of them before they settle on one. It beats the common (and I think ... well never mind, I will refrain from being insulting) question "which is the best desktop." Try them all and decide for yourself.

Another way is to use run level 4 and just log in and out using the gui. You can select whichever desktop you want to use each time.
