How to set up a router

I have fresh install of Slackware 10.2
I need to set up and run a router.
What are the main things I should do to achieve this?

What kind of soft must been installed and what config files are needed to configure?

Thank you.

/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/Firewall-HOWTO might be a good place to start.
