Here you go:

Code:

# slackpkg remove xfce
This will remove the whole [xfce] package group.

What Niki said. On the other hand, removing XFCE can only free a few MB on a hard drive. Keeping it won't slow your machine in any way and will allow you to use a few XFCE apps that you could find handy, as all can be used under Fluxbox (which I am using too, by the way).

More generally bear in mind, especially if you install applications built from SlackBuilds available @ http://slackbuilds.org that a full installation is always assumed, so you could find cases where you miss some library to compile or run the application, as it is supposed to be already installed.

Let's give an example: a friend of mine who's blind didn't initially install the X series of packages as he can't use a desktop or windows manager, but recently, trying to compile "catdoc" he came across a missing "libXft.so.2", contained in the libXft package from the X series.

i can switch between fluxbox and xfce easily like i change my dekstop backgrounds before.....so does it mean xfce still active?
or like the slackware philosophy of full install never really used till i invoke it mode?

yes i have done a full install...

If you do remove the xfce package then you will not able to switch without re-install of that xfce package. As other members have stated, why remove xfce. No gain but a few MB and potential need of available xfce libraries will be a a problem. Let it be!
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

When you use xfce fuxbox is inactive.
When you use fluxbox xfce is inactive.

So regardless of the number of desktops you have installed only one at a time use resource that can limit your system's performance (RAM+CPU).

PS According to my own observations[1] though, a major limiting factor exists between the chair and the keyboard ;)

[1]May be I should have written "introspection"

yes i do know that...actually i thought to just put away with it for good...

as didier pointed out if only a few MBs and a lil more libs...again no memory consumption so ok cool......

anytime we can do a remove as novak suggested too....

thanks everyone...
