How to read how to's...

how do I actually read the "HOWTOs".. I would assume that they were text files..

Stop laughing.. It isn't funny..

leonscape 08-23-2003 08:04 PM

Most how-to's (But not all) are written in sgml/xml type language.

But mostly their then converted to html for the Web. Their just web pages, you don't need any special software to read them. (Well a browser.)

sramelyk 08-23-2003 08:12 PM

Ok.. Forgive me for being new.. But I don't know much about Linux yet, apparently.. I want to read the HOWTOs, so that I don't have to ask everything thing in these forums.. My problem.. I don't know how to read them.. I have gotten to the right directory, and have found the HOWTOs.. But how do you read em'? If I use a browser, were is the one that is installed by default? And how do I load it?

Sorry for asking the basics.. But I can't figure it out.. I searched google and used the 'help' command.. Perhaps if someone can just kinda give me the answer, and I could read the HOWTOs and maybe learn more..

leonscape 08-23-2003 08:18 PM

So what are you running?

Are you just using the console? Not got a GUI running? X system KDE, Gnome?

A browser is Like Konqueror, Mozilla, Galeon. How are you reading this Forum?

sramelyk 08-23-2003 08:24 PM

Ok.. I am on a windows system here.. But am setting next to the pc with Linux on it.. Slackware 9.0.. I did a full install, so would assume that I have all the GUI interfaces.. Just don't know how to load them.. Figured I would read the howtos located in :

/usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs

I need the basics, basically...

zsejk 08-23-2003 08:27 PM

One way (but I'm quite new too, so this might suck) to read them could be:

cat filename | more (or "less", whatever)

But seriously... I really don't know.

:)

To start a windows-like environment, type

startx

at the command prompt. Gnome or KDE will open, depending on what you chose at install (I'm guessing it'll prolly be GNOME).

Good luck!

Hmm.. I got a fatal server error.. And i think I remember choosing 'KDE'.. Is there another way to load them?

leonscape 08-23-2003 08:30 PM

Complete Edit:

Hmmm sounds like an X problem, you can browse Howtos on your windows machine from http://www.tldp.org/ as well as from the distros website.

zsejk 08-23-2003 08:36 PM

Bah.... you got a fatal server error???

:(

I assume that whole "cat" thing didn't work then?

:)

-zsejk

P.S.: and leonscape is right... just read a few online from your Windows machine to get started

MiscGeek 08-23-2003 08:46 PM

There is a text browser, links, installed by default on most distros. It's pretty raw but should work fine for reading howtos.

To start just type "links". When you get to the blank screen just hit <ESC> for the menu.

Isn't that "lynx"?

:)

Text editor works great.. Thanks.. I tried to load STARTX again, but same thing.. It also says "Screen found, but none have a usable configuration".. How do I configure it?

On some distros it probably is. Red Hat started packaging links with I believe 7.2. I think they still distribute lynx it's just not installed by default.

Sushi...
If nowone know's what i mean, except mabey a few people in here, that's ok, as a note to all, assume nothing about the people you will encounter online.
Oh and 'links' is avail in slack 8.1 as we'll.

If u can not startx then u r probably still in the text mode.

Type /usr/X11R6/bin/xwmconfig on the prompt then u ll be able to choose another Windows-Session like gnome, ..
But ur error seemed to be in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config
See the documentation for configuation of X in the HOWTOs, it related to ur GraphicsCard n Monitor ..

To read text file, the simplest tool would likely be "less", u can surely read those files in /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTO/* or /usr/doc/Linux-mini-HOWTO with less.

Remember to navigate to next page use "space-bar", to previous-screen use "b", to quit less use "q", that easy is that ..

To browse the file within the ext2fs partitions (used by many linux distros) from within windows u can use this tool :
