The modules in /usr/X11/lib/modules/dri are *.so and modules in /usr/X11/lib/modules/drivers are *.o on my machine. I dont know whats the standard.

it is .so on mine as well ... that's odd.

Probably varies with distro version. 10.2 vs. 11.0

I had this same problem. Checked the logs and t said DRI is disabled because it only runs in 16-bit mode. Checked defaultdepth to 16, restarted X and I have log lines with DRI enabled and even AIGLX. glxinfo confirms this.
