how to get more resolution in KDE and in console
 

Hi recently i purchased a new 17" tft screen. previously i had 15" crt.
the thing is that i am unable to change the resolution for console or KDE
i tried xorgconf for KDE and tried to modify lilo.conf for console
but none of options in lilo yield a result as my screen hangs after i change vga=normal to any other option.

also even for kde its not possible to change resolution to other than 800X600
however in my XP i can go upto 1200*something(Sorry i dont remember the resoltions)

What video card do you have ? It may be useful to run 'xorgsetup'.

Also, what kernel are you running, is it standard or custom ? What framebuffer support is enabled ... etc.

Sounds like 2 separate problems here. One involves your xorg resolution, one involves the console resolution. Your console resolution is determined by your bootloader as you've noted. You may not have other options available (you may only have 800x600 available for the framebuffer chosen in the kernel, if it's not hard coded, then one of the other options like 791 for example should produce different results) due to your kernel configuration.

Your xorg resolution may also be restricted if you aren't using a "good" driver for your hardware. If you have an Nvidia card, that means either using the open source nv option or the closed source binary blob nvidia provides. For ati it's the same thing, with intel though you have a few better options as the intel drivers for linux are quite good (the newer ones). So... what hardware do you have?

bought a 19" lg fantasy and had a similar problem, then I used nvidia control program and this created a xorg.conf file that I just copied and pasted to the correct place and now I achieve the required resolution. ( 1280 x 1024 )
