Unhappy How to disable eth0 ?

My problem is that whenever i bootup my eth0 automatically acquires an address 192.168.1.2.Even when i use ifconfig eth0 down it again acquires the address and shows the same ip i.e 192.168.1.2 As a result i cant use pppoe i.e pppoe connects but can't ping any site and internet won't work.
What i want is that when i boot up i shd issue a command that disables eth0 i.e it shd not show any ip address when i use ifconfig eth0.So that after disabling it i can start ppoe and then internet starts.
Please guide me because i have been working for past 3 days just to have an internet connection working on pppoe and all i could figure out was that first i should disable eth0 and then issue pppoe-start and then i can use the internet.
Please help

If you don't have any other NIC I think this will do :
#vi /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

Here find the MAXNICS=6 line ... and make it MAXNICS=0

this should work. If you have other NICs , then you will have to edit rc.inet.conf

Read through the rc.inet1 scripts, very well documented by Pat!
