How much RAM do you run Slackware 14.1 on?

Version: 14.1 64
desktop environment: xfce
RAM: 1gb
CPU: 2x 1ghz

I wonder what is the average amount of RAM. 1GB seems to be quite sufficient. But from tommorow I will have 2 GB.

Do virtual machines count? If so, x86_64 with 512M. If not, 2G on a 64bit dual core.

Right now there are 661MB used from 2GB according to Conky,
with Thunderbird, Firefox and some others running.
Right after boot, in Xfce Conky shows 250~300MB used.

In addition there is a 2GB swap partition but it is rarely used.

I run Slackware64-Current on 4GB of DDR3.

I have an 8GB swap for large compiles, but it's rarely used unless I'm build webkitgtk, qt, or openjdk rebuilds.

Currently using 5GB of RAM out of 8GB (with another 2.3GB cached) and 7.5GB of swap.

When I get in my development sessions with a lot of research, Chrome can be quite the hog...

4GB DDR2 PC2-6400 with 8GB swap.

Swap hardly ever gets used unless compiling something big.

16G.

Or, I'll put as much RAM on a motherboard as it will hold.

For a desktop or laptop or server I try to avoid machines with less than 4GB. I do have a desktop and a laptop running 14.1 each with 4GB in them. My main laptop and main home workstation both have 16GB. My employer is a cheapskate, so the workstation at work running 14.1 has 8GB. I also have thirteen servers at home, seven with 8GB (all powered down at the moment), five with 16GB and one with 32GB.

My current plan is to install 14.2 on one of the currently powered down 8GB home servers for testing. If all goes well 14.2 will eventually go onto the 32GB machine. I might also put it on the 4GB laptop, which is acting as the gateway / firewall / atmospheric control for the outbuilding housing the servers -- http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...shelves-36351/

I wish my motherboard would support more than 8GBs... but that's what I get for running an 8 year old board. But a light is on the horizon... I'm waiting to hear more on AMD's Zen (due Q4 this year) and if it's close to what they're projecting, I'll probably jump on that and get a massive upgrade

That is a huge span between 0,5 GB and 32 GB.

Many users have a giant amounts of RAM.

I have installed 2 GB DDR2 5300S now.

When I booted freshly into xfce I have:
22 % used

With Thunderbird/Firefox it shows:
51 % used

With Thunderbird, firefox with a draining website, small Gimp session and filebrowser:
73 % used.

When I add libre office writer session:
89 % used, still no swap in use.

Of course RAM allocation is dynamically. But considering that 1 GB did work quite alright and these values now, I think 2 GB are absolutely OK for my everyday use that doesn't contain draining activity.

My mainboard would hold 3 GB.
